Glycolipid
Ceramide is one of the main constituents of intercorneocyte lipids and plays an important role in the barrier and moisturizing functions of the skin. Skin is constantly exposed to external stimulation (temperature change, dehydration, various germs, ticks, etc.), and it has recently been explained that the deterioration of the barrier function of skin is mainly caused by a decrease in the level of ceramides. A significantly decreased level of ceramides was confirmed in atopic dermatitis, the skin disease; however, the barrier and moisturizing functions of the skin improved by externally replenishing the ceramides. In addition, intercorneocyte ceramides are known to decrease with aging and are associated with the symptoms of skin dehydration, wrinkles, and rough skin due to aging.
We extract and purify ceramides (glucosylceramides) mainly from the secondary products of plant raw materials for use as raw materials for cosmetics and health foods, as well as for the improvement of skin disease as described above.

A ganglioside is a glycolipid that results from the coupling of sphingolipids with a sugar chain and a sialic acid and has the strange property of dissolving in water despite the fact that it is a lipid. Studies of gangliosides have examined the relationship to the nervous system since gangliosides are present in large amounts in the human brain. Recently, noticeable results have been reported on the enhancement of LTP and the memory-improving effect in animal models of Parkinson’s disease. However, gangliosides (GM1) have not been commonly used because of safety concerns since the raw materials are extracted from animal brains and the extracts are expensive.
In response to these challenges, we successfully extracted plant gangliosides and distributed them as functional foods to the general market. We have developed safe raw materials for health foods by extracting sphingolipids, which have a close structure to gangliosides, from plants.
Functional Ingredients
Turmeric
Turmeric, whose scientific name is Curcuma domestica (English name: turmeric), is widely known as a spice and is a Zingiberaceae perennial originally found in the tropics of Asia and Okinawa. Turmeric contains plentiful amounts of natural calcium, iron, and selenium, as well as plant fiber; in particular, the yellow pigment component of curcumin, which is a characteristic of turmeric, has drawn a lot of attention. Curcuma is roughly classified into autumn turmeric and spring turmeric according to harvest periods and is clearly classified by color. This is due to the difference in the curcumin content, the pigment component. Recently, turmeric has become popular as a beauty supplement for women and those who are careful about health maintenance or abdominal fat.
Moromi vinegar
Moromi vinegar is made from the extract in brewing awamori in Okinawa. Aspergillus niger is used in brewing awamori, and the yeast fungus is added for fermentation. Subsequently, the alcohol is removed to obtain moromi vinegar. Moromi vinegar contains amino acids and citric acids.
Moromi vinegar powder Pure
Since moromi vinegar is highly hygroscopic due to the many component amino acids and citric acids, it was difficult to powderize without adding filler or excipients. Moromi vinegar causes nausea when consumed as a drink due to the peculiar flavor; therefore, the excellent components in the product were hard to ingest. We recently succeeded in developing the original technology to reduce the hygroscopicity of moromi vinegar and powderize the product without adding filler for Pure Moromi Vinegar made from 100% moromi vinegar. Pure moromi vinegar powder can be used in various products including tablets, soft capsules, and concentrated drinks.
Chaga
Chaga (fuscoporia obliqua) is a mushroom found on white birch tress found in extremely cold areas, such as the mountains of Siberia. The mushroom is not necessarily found on any white birch. The rare mushroom grows for several years and is called the “jewel in the forest.” The mushroom has a dark brown appearance and is very stiff; at first glance, it looks like a rock. Chaga absorbs nutrients from the white birch; therefore, the tree may wither. In Russia, chaga is popular for beauty and health maintenance since early times. The mushroom contains the various components of sodium, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, β-glucan, inositol, polyphenol, and ergosterol, as well as plentiful dietary fibers. Among them, the noticeable component specific to chaga is water-soluble lignin.
Functions of lignin
Lignin is one of the main components of plant cell walls. Well-known cellulose and hemicellulose, other than lignin, are part of the components of plant cell walls. The two components are straight chain polysaccharides produced via the condensation polymerization of water-soluble saccharides, while lignin has a three-dimensional network structure produced via the dehydrogenation polymerization of poorly water-soluble molecules. Because of the differences, lignin is hydrophobic compared to other components and strengthens cells by filling the spaces between the cell walls and the cells. In addition, lignin has physical strength through a very stable structure, i.e. “carbon-carbon bond” and “carbon-oxygen-carbon bond,” due to the lignin structure (dehydrogenation polymerization); consequently, it is resistant to bacterial decomposition and provides trees with strong resistance to decomposition.
Day lily
The day lily is also called wasurenagusa in Japanese (Liliaceae, dialect: Kuwansou), and the scientific name is Hemerocallis. The day lily is an evergreen perennial plant found in Japan and Taiwan and is cultivated in from southern Kyushu to Okinawa. The day lily is an extremely strong plant with a yellow underground stem from which its roots extend horizontally, and a new trunk develops at the tip of the roots. In Okinawa, the plant has grown in gardens or kitchen gardens since early times. The day lily contains asparagine, lysine, and arginine in its buds and roots and has antipyretic, diuretic, puffiness suppression, hypnotic, and swelling suppression effects. The flowering part of the day lily is considered effective in relieving insomnia; therefore, the flowers of the day lily are eaten pickled.
Melatonin
Sunlight regulates the circadian rhythm of melatonin levels. In humans, the level begins to rise at around 8 p.m. reaching the highest at night, and begins to fall at around 6 a.m. reaching the lowest in the daytime. Sleeping disorders, insomnia, and some irregularities of sleep are caused by a disturbance in the circadian melatonin rhythm; therefore, treatment with melatonin is common. In our study, among 17 subjects who ingested the day lily, melatonin levels rose in the following number of subjects:
・12 subjects in day 14 (70.5%)
・10 subjects in day 28 (58.8%)
The day lily can be used in various products including tablets, hard capsules, and drinks.
Peucedanum japonicum
Peucedanum japonicum is an Apiaceae plant, whose Japanese name is botanboufuu, found on Yonaguni-jima Island in Okinawa. The plant grows wild along sunny shoreline areas of coral limestone. Peucedanum japonicum is about one meter in height and is a perennial or triennial evergreen herb. The thick root stem and multibranched stems have thick, dark green, exuberant foliage. Peucedanum japonicum is effective in treating high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, rheumatism, neuralgia, colds, and asthma since early times, and offers a hepatoprotective effect as suggested in a recent study.
Antioxidation
Botanboufuu is characterized by its antioxidative components of carotene, vitamin E, vitamin B2, and vitamin C and is considered very effective in preventing adult diseases because of the high content of dietary fibers.
We have developed efficient production technologies including our original concentration technology. The technologies can be applied to tablets, hard capsules, and drinks.
